Francis House of Peace, Project HOME
In collaboration with Collette Fu and Brad Litwin
This artwork honors the rich culture and values of the community at the Project HOME building for formerly homeless, low-income people and families in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. A Moon-gate hutong; projected traditional poetry by Li Bai, one of China’s best known poets; bamboo etchings; and custom coin-inlaid tiling reinforce themes of resilience, prosperity, and family. The etched lobby glass is created from artwork by children at the Chinatown Learning Center, adults at Project HOME, teens at Rowan Homes, and seniors from the OnLok House in Chinatown. A row of wooden doors inside the lobby suggests a hundred-eye apothecary drawer or Chinese herbal chest, and pulling on its handles reveals scenes of compiled images taken by Colette on her many trips to China and around the Chinatown neighborhood.apothecary drawer or Chinese herbal chest, and pulling on the handles reveals a scene made from compiled images taken by Colette Fu on her many trips to China and in the Chinatown neighborhood.
